momstown Kids take a Trip Around the World to Japan!

Konichiwa!

Our momstown Milton mamas and tots had a great time traveling to Japan at our Trip Around the World program.

We started off talking about the Japanese language.  We learned that the word "konichiwa" means hello, and looked at how the word is written.  We first looked at the English word "hello' and the children identified the letters.  Then we looked at the Japanese word "konichiwa".  We learned that Japanese characters are different from the abc's that we use in the English language.  Next, we watched a short segment of Japanese Sesame Street so that we could hear how speaking the language sounds.  I think the kids were surprised to see Elmo speaking Japanese!

We then talked about the flag of Japan.  Our travellers identified that the flag was made up of a red circle and a white rectangle.  Japan is also known as "the land of the rising sun", and the red circle represents this.  We all made a flag - a very quick craft!

After the flag, we talked about the delicious food that comes from Japan.  There are so many great dishes, however I chose to focus on sushi.  We talked about the different ingredients that go into sushi - the special rice, the nori (seaweed), and the filling - we chose avocado, cucumber, and yams.  Our World travellers had a chance to taste some nori.  A hit with some, but not for all!

The children were interested to see sushi being made.  Once the sticky rice was spread over the nori, the sweet potato was added.  Using a sushi mat, I rolled it up and voila!  Sushi!

Everyone was invited to try some rolls, and received a small amount of soy sauce on their plates for dipping.

Once we were all finished with the yummy sushi, we talked about origami, a popular activity for Japanese children.  We made simple hats.  This could easily be done with a sheet of newspaper for party hats, pirate fun, or a rainy day activity.  Our hats were about the right size for a doll, or for an adorable baby!

We headed to the back yard where everyone was given a colourful origami boat to float in the pool!  This was a hit with the kids!  Making a boat is really easy.  Our boats floated, but didn't last too long in the water!  The boats falling apart in the water was also very entertaining for our little travellers, so no one seemed to mind when boats started sinking and falling apart!

It was a wonderful morning.  Thanks to everyone for coming out, and thank you to all the brave travellers who tried sushi for the first time today!  Sayonara!

Holiday Cooking with Kids - Easy and Elegant Cheese Balls

momstown Milton mamas and their junior chefs created an easy yet elegant cheese ball that the little ones pretty much made all by themselves! Special thanks to Mary-Anne Scaturchio-Selwa from My Smart Hands Milton for this sweet and delightful cheese ball recipe.

What you need

1. 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened

2. 3/4 cup coconut or chocolate chips or dried fruit (use whatever you have on hand!)

3. 2 tbsp of Epicure Selections Mocha Cheese Seasoning

What you need to do

1. In a large bowl, add the Epicure Selections Mocha Cheese Seasoning to the cream cheese.

2. Using a mixer, beat the cream cheese mixture until fluffy.

3. Shape the cream cheese mixture into a ball.

4. Roll coconut or whatever topping of choice (chocolate chips shown in pictures below) onto your cream cheese ball.

This is how we roll!

With the holidays in full swing, this cheese ball making activity was a great way for our junior chefs to get into the festive spirit. They took simple ingredients and created a show stopping treat that could be proudly displayed on the holiday buffet table!

Exploring Mother Nature

Our momstown Milton little explorers went on a scavenger hunt today around the Mill Pond. Each toddler was handed a scavenger list of items that they would need to search for during our walk around the pond. They came well prepared with safari hats, butterfly nets and binoculars to aid in the adventure they were about to have.

It was amazing to watch the tots take in and observe everything that crossed their path. High or low, up and down, they left no stone unturned. Some took the search rather seriously and were determined to check off every item on the list, while others just took their time to smell the roses and absorb it all in.

We were rather lucky to see a few live creatures up close and personal! Wow check out the fuzzy caterpillar on the twig or the baby goslings that swam right by us. While others like the turtles sun bathing on the log or the fish in the pond we had to observe from a distance.

All in all, we had a great time identifying the items on the list and I'm pretty certain that at least one little keener found them all! Our next Little Explorers event is scheduled for July 7th. Hope you are able to join us on our exciting adventure!

Crafty Critters

This months educational theme for all of our momstown chapters is Hats. Our momstown Milton munchkins had a wonderful time at Scribble n Splatter designing silly hats and feather hats to take home with them. Crafty Critters is a new program that has been introduced as part of our Milton monthly events for 2011. The program allows for our little ones of all ages to get creative, express themselves and make as much of a mess as they want. The best part of the program is that mom doesn't have to clean up! Our next Crafty Critters program is scheduled for Tuesday February 8th. If you would like to attend this event but are not a member please contact info.milton@momstown.ca for more details.
