Can My Child Wear Contact Lenses?

Have you thought about the possibility of contact lenses for your child, but maybe dismissed the thought assuming that they are too young? Contact lenses may be a viable option for your child and here are some questions and answers to help you decide:
Question: Does a child's prescription need to be stable before they can be fit with contact lenses?

No. Most prescriptions continue to change as a child grows, and contact lenses can change with it. Children are often fit with daily disposable contact lenses, and any prescription changes can be easily updated.

Question: Can children handle wearing contact lenses?

Yes. Even young children can be fit with contact lenses. With appropriate instruction, most children can put contact lenses in their eyes and remove them easily. Children are also just as capable as looking after their contact lenses as an adult. An Optometrist will always consider a number of factors with a child's family to decide if contact lenses are appropriate, such as the child's maturity, their current activities and motivation to wear them.

Question: How do I know if contact lenses are a better option for my child than glasses?

Ask yourself a few questions to help you decide. Is my child bothered by wearing glasses? Is my child responsible enough to care for contact lenses? Would contact lenses be easier for them during their sports and activities? Would their social quality of life be better with contact lenses instead of glasses?

Question: Is it safe for a child to wear contact lenses?

Absolutely, as long as they have been prescribed and fit by a regulated eye care professional such as an Optometrist.

REMEMBER - In Ontario, only a regulated health care or medical professional can prescribe and dispense contact lenses. Contact lenses are a medical device and as such, anyone wearing contact lenses should receive regular exams and follow-up care to ensure that they are dong well.

Milton Optometry recommends comprehensive eye exams every year, and welcomes infants, toddlers and children of all ages to our family-friendly office! Visit www.miltonoptometry.ca or phone 905-636-9500 to reserve an appointment for your family.

How long have you been a member of momstown Milton : Since January 2013

Previous Job: Project Manager for a large Canadian retailer (until my mat leave). and before that, a Project Manager for a large telecom company

Describe your experience as a momstown Milton member :

momstown saved me in my early days as a new mom! I am a first time mom, and we didn’t really know anyone in Milton. I was very hesitant to attend my first event (Baby Basics) back in January, but I am so glad that I did. It was such a supportive and welcoming environment. It really brought me out of my shell and allowed me to connect with other moms, and the unconditional support I got from the events and the message board got me through those first tough months. I have made amazing connections and will carry those friendships for many years to come. I talk about momstown constantly and can’t stop recommending it to all of the new moms I meet in and around town.

Now I have the amazing opportunity of being the new Community Manager for momstown Milton and I am so excited! I have some great ideas for new programming, and I am looking forward to connecting with all members, old and new. One of the most rewarding things about my role is the ability to meet new members and help them experience everything momstown has to offer. I also can’t wait to work with all of our members to create programming and experiences that both moms and children can enjoy and learn from.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any ideas/suggestions/comments on programming or content you would like to see added to our exciting calendar of events (or if you just want to chat about anything at all!).

Looking forward to seeing all of you in the days and weeks to come!

momstown Milton Junior Chef - Healthy Tacos using Pinto Beans!

We had a GREAT time this morning at our momstown Milton Junior Chef program!  We made delicious tacos, and everyone - moms and tots got to enjoy lunch together!

We started off by measuring out our spices into a bowl.  Our friends took turns with the measuring spoons, adding chili powder, cumin and salt.

Our ground beef was cooked in advance to save some time.  When cooking with kids, they don't tend to enjoy waiting for the cooking stage!  Thinking ahead and modifying your preparation of a recipe is always a good idea!  Today I was excited to have two great sous chefs offer assistance, so while the rest of us continued in preparing our ingredients, they got busy cooking our chopped onions at the stove!

While the onions and spices were being cooked, the kids spent some time dumping the canned pinto beans out and rinsing them.  They also took turns spooning out 1/2c of fresh salsa and one cup of tomato sauce into a measuring cup.  All of this was added to our pan, along with the cooked ground beef.

While the delicious smelling taco mix simmered on the stove, the Junior Chefs took some time to rip up some crisp romaine lettuce and shred some cheddar cheese for topping our tacos.

At last, time to assemble and eat our tacos. Our version is a healthier choice cutting out a great deal of sodium vs the packaged taco seasoning, and also adding healthy pinto beans.  It was great to sit down with our kids and enjoy lunch that we made together.

Here's the recipe:

1 lb lean ground beef (you could also use ground chicken or turkey)
1 small onion, chopped
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 tablespoon chili powder (we used mild chili powder)
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 (15-ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
8oz canned tomato sauce
3/4c water
1/2c salsa
taco shells
toppings of your choice

Preparation
  1. Cook ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, stirring until beef crumbles and is no longer pink.  Drain well. Remove beef; wipe skillet with a paper towel.
  2. Sauté onion in hot oil in same skillet over medium-high heat. Add chili powder, cumin, salt, and beef. Cook 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Stir in beans, tomato sauce, 3/4 cup water, and salsa.
  4. Mash pinto beans in skillet with fork, leaving some beans whole.
  5. Bring to a boil; reduce heat, and simmer, uncovered, 8 to 10 minutes or until liquid is reduced.
  6. prepare toppings and enjoy your tacos!

I hope you enjoy this meal with your kids one day soon!  I'm looking forward to trying it next time without the meat, using double the beans. Cooking together is such a pleasure, and it always seems that kids are more interested in eating meals that they have had a hand in preparing.  We call it "the magic of Junior Chef" because we often have parents expressing surprise at what their child will eat while at the program that they won't eat at home!

momstown is proud to offer programs based on our 6 Program Pillars.  If you haven't been to a momstown Milton Junior Chef event, please check one out soon.  We hold this event monthly and it is always a great time for all.

Keeping up with your Child’s Immune System

The immune system is one of the most important systems of the body to develop. Many people are unaware how much a child’s immune system development impacts their overall health for the future.

Symptoms such as skin rashes, digestive problems, runny nose, as well as atopic diseases (conditions that are characterized by allergic hypersensitivity), such as eczema, asthma, and allergies, are good examples of what can happen when the immune system has not been exposed to the proper stimulus.

At birth the neonatal immune system is completely sterile and naïve, and over the next 12 years its daily environmental exposures dictates the proper development, and strength of the immune system. A child’s immune system first exposure is to bacteria when passing through the vaginal canal, and then to mom’s first breast milk (colostrum), with these two exposures being extremely important in activating the appropriate signals for immune system development.

From then, breast milk provides the child proteins that protect the child from certain microbial exposures, as well as factors to properly develop the immune system. Food introduction in the later months also dictates the development of the immune system. The function of the intestines and the bacteria lining (probiotics) is to monitor what can pass through the gastrointestinal tract in to the bloodstream. Early introduction of the more “allergic” food groups, such as grains, cow’s dairy, and soy, can trigger improper immune development as the gastrointestinal tract (the largest of the immune organs) has not been fully developed.

An underdeveloped gut in an infant is more “permeable”, meaning that there are gaps in the intestinal lining, allowing other larger structures to pass through and enter the bloodstream. When this happens, the naïve immune system automatically tags these structures as “harmful” and will develop antibodies so that future exposure to these proteins (and others with similar structures) will trigger an unwanted immune response.

Recent studies have actually found that kids with a strong family history of atopic diseases, such as asthma and allergies, have a lower incidence of atopic disease at 5 years of age if not fed dairy or soy, compared to those children fed cow’s milk or soy in their early years. As you can see, dietary exposure in the first years of life is crucial to ensuring that the immune system is working properly.

So what are some steps new moms can take in order to optimize your baby’s immune growth:

1) Vaginal delivery and breastfeeding (at least 12 months is optimal): This is the best way of priming your neonate’s immune system to develop properly. There are a number of limitations to this as complications can arise, preventing this step from being fulfilled. This is why we have step #2

2) If complications arose and you were/are not able to either give birth vaginally, or breast feed don’t fret! We can still ensure your little one’s health by providing a safe probiotic alternative. A good quality neonatal probiotic will contain bacteria similar to the ones found in breast milk.

3) Formula: if you are choosing to supplement using formula, try making your own formula (alternative health care practitioners can provide you with recipes). Some hypoallergenic formulas still use dairy, but the proteins are partially broken down, decreasing the burden of infants digestive tract. Supplementing with a probiotic while feeding formula is essential. Please visit www.specialtyfoodshop.com to view some hypoallergenic options!

4) Food introduction: Limit the amount of grains, and pure proteins to your baby before 9 months – by sticking exclusively to hypoallergenic vegetables and fruits, as well as breastfeeding before this time, we can cut the amount of exposure to hyperallergenic proteins in cereals and formulas. After 9 months, slow introduction to the more hyperallergenic foods along with breastfeeding can decrease the chances of developing an unfavorable reaction. Your alternative healthcare professional should be able to provide you with a comprehensive food schedule.

Note: I get a lot of new moms worrying that if they don’t give their child fortified rice cereals, the child will not get enough nutrients to grow (such as iron, calcium). Vegetables contain more than enough nutrients to give your child the iron, calcium, antioxidants and fats they need. The breast-milk should be able to provide the rest, but make sure your diet is just as healthy as your child!

5) Moms need to keep healthy too! Moms, keep your diet clean, healthy and full of vegetables and fruits. Much of your infants daily nutrient needs come from you! Supplementing yourself with a good probiotic, and keeping up with your prenatals can help keep your immune defenses up during the wonderful, yet stressful experience of motherhood.

momstown Milton Book Review sponsored by Scholastic - Inhuman by Kat Falls

This month our momstown Milton Mama Book Club was sponsored by Scholastic Canada. We had the opportunity to read "Inhuman" by Kat Falls and we loved it.

Literacy is one of the key principles of momstown's 6 Program Pillarsmomstown encourages a foundation of early learning for children through interactive and engaging activities. Learning is essentially a part of our life's journey, it starts when we're young and continues on throughout the years.  As moms, it is important for us to set an example to our children and promote a love of reading.

With excitement and passion, our momstown Milton moms got together to discuss the book Inhuman by Kat Falls.  This is the second  Mom Book Club sponsored by Scholastic this year and we were in for quite a treat.

The chat consisted of the momstown Milton moms praising the character of Delaney Park McEvoy, or Lane as she liked to be called.  This courageous and inquisitive girl battled against the odds and entered the Feral Zone to save her loved one.  The Feral Zone inhabitants included terrifying guards, “manimals”, and other dangerous and deadly creatures. Using her survival skills, intellect and tenacity, Lane set out to learn the truth about her family, and about herself.

Falls engaging narrative and fast-paced twists and turns proved to be a compelling read.  The moms enjoyed the speed of the book and the descriptive story-telling style.  The Mama’s Book Club conversation quickly jumped from action scene to action scene, replaying the drama of the story. We debated the necessity of protecting children from dangerous truths vs. allowing children to challenge themselves and go in search of the truth.

The rise and the strength of the female protagonist Lane was much appreciated among the moms.  They applauded the lengths she would travel to for the truth and to save a loved one, qualities that the moms hope to embody and pass along to their children. We thoroughly enjoyed the book and were very grateful to Scholastic Canada for providing such a compelling and touching read for the Mama’s Book Club discussion.

Memorable quotes by our momstown Milton moms about Inhuman.

“This book was a quick and fun read, perfect for a busy mama.”

“The character of Lane was very well done.  Her journey of self-discovery compelled the reader.”

“The love triangle in the book was done well, and subtle.  It was enjoyable to follow.”

“The idea of a dystopian society does not seem that far-fetched and the book was an interesting take on the topic.”

momstown.ca conference brought our team to new highs

momstown conferences are always focused on business planning, collaborative work, key team building and updates from our National team (with some fun thrown in as well!). This November, the conference brought our team to new highs in the beautiful setting of Niagara Falls.

We enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the Courtyard Marriott, including dinner at the Keg Steakhouse right on site, and started the conference off with something key to all successful businesses - celebration and recognition.

I was so proud to receive an award from my peers - the Community Leadership award was presented to momstown Milton and I felt so honoured to be recognized. Milton is an amazing community in which to be an entrepreneur, and the support from both our town and the momstown community is truly special.

The celebratory mood from Friday carried over into the entire conference - but it was also a lot of hard work, big decisions, and key financial planning that every momstown chapter fully engaged in over the course of the weekend. We were fortunate to work with Shelagh Cummins from BizTrainHer.com, who really challenged us to set goals, work through a plan, and know our value.

We were also treated to a wine tour at Chateau des Charmes, enjoyed mani/pedis from Ah Bella Luna Mobile Spa, and will have some fabulous new professional photos to share soon from CL Buchanan Photography!

We all left with strong business plans, new goals to reach, and a renewed sense of how amazing our community is - from every little person we touch through our programming, to the businesses we work with, to the collaborative force of the momstown team across the country.

I'm so proud to be part of this amazing team of business women, and can't wait to ride the highs into 2014 and beyond!

Having a Ball at momstown Milton Baby Sensory!

Our momstown Milton babies had a ball at Baby Sensory Exploration!  This week the babies had lots of different balls to keep them busy - balls of different colours, sizes and textures.

Everyone was excited to see the bright colours, and didn't waste time getting their little hands on the nearest ball!  Babies explored with their hands, mouths and eyes.  We had bumpy balls, fuzzy wooly pom pom balls, bouncy balls, and balls that magically grew and shrunk with the help of mom!

Moms had fun rolling the balls to their little ones, and tossing the soft balls up into the air. It is so much fun to watch the look of wonder on a young child's face, witnessing the simplest of pleasures! Some kids quickly figured out how to toss the balls, and had a blast watching the reaction of their moms!

It was nice to have the little ones enjoying an activity together, and great for the mamas to have a chance to sit and connect with one another.  The momstown Milton Baby Sensory group is a popular event for  our families with babies ages 6-18 months.  We run  this program four times a month, with two different activities monthly.

momstown is proud to offer programs based on our 6 Program Pillars.  If you haven't had the pleasure of attending Baby Sensory with your child, we would love to see you out at a group soon!

Milton moms enjoyed our Tales for Tots Program this month sponsored by McDonald's!

This month our momstown Milton moms and tots enjoyed an extra special Tales for Tots Program sponsored by McDonald's Canada! For a limited time offer (November 4th - November 15th) each child will receive a book focused around healthy eating with every Happy Meal purchased. The books are fun and relatable and encourage the little ones to really think about the food choices that they make. Here is the listing of the 4 books that are available:

The Goat Who Ate Everything – Tells the story of a goat who has a big appetite and struggles to eat right, but when he does, he feels great and becomes the playful ‘kid’ everyone loves.

Deana’s Big Dreams – Shares how Deana, the world’s smallest dinosaur, grew tall by eating right.

Ant, Can’t – Features Ant, a bite-sized bodybuilder who’s big on encouraging physical fitness through exercise and eating right.

Doddi the Dodo Goes to Orlando – Follows happy-go-lucky bird Doddi, who travels the world. She eats right because this dodo is always on the go-go.

McDonald's will also be releasing monthly e-books, which are available on McPlay™ - McDonald’s Happy Meal app.

Our little readers enjoyed listening to The Goat Who Ate Everything and Deana's Big Dreams while snacking on apple slices, yogurt parfaits and juice. The mamas really appreciated the McCafe beverages that they received from our friendly hosts- a book and a coffee what a great way to start the day!

The kids then went to work on their food mobiles that helped them learn about the food groups and having a balanced meal. They were so proud of their creations and were eager to get them home to hang up as a daily reminder to eat right!

After hitting the play land for a little while everyone was ready for lunch. McDonald's had spoiled us with swag bags filled with books, a nutrition guide, and coupons for a FREE Happy Meal - Yipee! A special shout out to the Milton location for ensuring that ALL of our little ones including siblings and the extra participants that showed up received a complimentary meal as well!

McDonald's has come a long way in evolving the Happy Meal to reflect customers’ changing wants and needs. Happy Meals now offer options that include a Danino® Strawberry Yogurt, the choice of apple slices, small or mini-size French fries, and the choice of a low-fat dairy option like 1 per cent white or chocolate milk. It's a great option for families that are on the go and need to grab a quick meal or for an occasional treat!

Here's what our mamas thought about the event:

"Isabella's favourite book is Deana's Big Dream and she was reading it all day.  She loved the fact that the last page is like a poster and was bigger then the book. The cherry on top was the fact that she got apple slices, juice, and a Happy Meal for lunch (a treat definitely). Overall, it was a great day!"                                                                                                           IsabellaEmilia

"Ryan really enjoyed himself. I also like the idea of a book instead of toy. Ryan has been reading them everyday. I also love that the there is healthy options especially since my eldest doesn't like fries."                                                                                                            MandyM

"This was a great event. My daughter enjoyed the crafts and the play area.. But most of all she loved the food and books. She loves to "read" and being able to do that while having some apples and yogurt and knowing these healthy snacks are available with the happy meals makes me feel less guilty about using McDonalds as an alternate for dinner when I need to. I hope they continue with the literacy component books are of greater value and use to children then the toys they get in the happy meals. Great job McDonalds"                                                           VanessaR

"It was great. I enjoyed how everything was incorporated into healthy eating....the books are a great treat instead of a new toy.  I never let my son have McDonald's but now I see the healthy options available. We will definitely go back for a kids meal treat.  So not only was the event fun for my kids but it was insightful for me."                                                                 M. Moscoso

Thanx again McDonald's for including momstown Milton in your literacy launch. All of our participants left smiling from ear to ear!
