Momstown Milton Mom's Night Out: Food Sensitivities Education

momstown Milton moms got a special treat as part of the Biggest Loser Challenge (bi-weekly expert speaker series) on Monday January 28, 2013. We headed over to Sam Kassam-Macfie's house, our momstown Milton owner, for a unique education from Kristen Owens, Registered Holistic Nutritionist & BioEnergetic Practitioner.

Kristen explained to us that what we were about to learn in our session was very different from what we would be told in a traditional doctor's office, for example; as science cannot validate the holistic practice, similar to the practice of acupuncture which science cannot validate. We were advised upfront that Kristen's role is not to treat, cure or heal. The focus is on balancing our body's energies.

We hear a lot about food sensitivities these days and we've often said to each other during casual conversations that when we were growing up, we didn't worry about food allergies. It wouldn't even cross our minds. Our moms would pack a peanut butter sandwich lunch for us and we all thought nothing of it. With the increase of the prevalence of food allergies, we've become much more aware and with that comes our need for understanding.

There are many factors that can trigger sensitivities such as emotional; environmental; food intake etc. To show us how Kristen would determine what intolerance's we had based on our body's individual energy, we took turns going up to her and working through establishing our body's energy flow. It is important, Kristen cautioned us, that we have the right energy flow so that the testing is accurate.

For instance, supposing you had symptoms of cramping, bloating and diarrhea - Kristen would pull out various vials (representing energy in everything from: dairy, amino acids, and even including mould and dust!) to test your body's energy field.  Some of our mamas (and a cute true tidbit here: in a room of 11 ladies, we had three Kristens!) loved apples and so Kristen tested their body's energy field for their response to apples. Some were pleasantly surprised to learn that their "apple a day" consumption was A-OK by their body's energies and others were surprised to learn that apples were in fact not resonating with their body's energy. Thus, a "clearing" would be necessary to send the energy frequency back into the right flow.

Kristen was careful to tell us that she is not diagnosing any medical conditions and encourages people to continue working with their medical doctors. The goal of what she's doing is to balance the body. If the body is imbalanced in its frequencies, then it can contribute to imbalance in the body. Amino acids intolerance can create symptoms such as: increased weight gain; difficulty with losing weight; weakened muscle strength; increased sighing and yawning; decreased libido; among others.

All in all, we learned about bringing the body back to balance. And even once we undergo a holistic "clearing", our physical body wouldn't necessarily respond right away so we could potentially still test as allergic and/or intolerant under traditional medical testing. An initial consultation with Kristen could be 1/2 hour to 1 1/2 hours in length and the clearings could be anywhere from 1 - 4 sessions.

As an exclusive to momstown Milton members, Kristen is offering 10% off bookings made for her services within the next 2 weeks.

Top 10 Checklist for your financial health

Top 10 Checklist for your financial health

Here is a list of things for you to do this month to position yourself well for the rest of the year!

1.       Going in to the year deep in debt? Meet with an advisor to lay it all out on the table and develop a plan of action to get off the treadmill once and for all!

2.       Update, review or get a will and power of attorney for finance and health care.

3.       Review your year-end company pension plan statements. Is it all in order? If you get to choose the investments yourself, how have they done? Where should they be invested?

4.       Same as #3 for your personal savings, RRSP’s and RESP’s.

5.       Catalogue what is renewing this year. When does your home and auto insurance come due? Maturing GIC’s and term deposits? Mortgage renewing this year? Start shopping now.

6.       How much life insurance do you have? How much are you paying for it? Your life insurance portfolio should be reviewed every 3 years or as life changes happen.

7.       Between the ages 21 and 50? Have you talked to your advisor about critical illness insurance and disability income replacement?

8.       Between the ages 50 and 70? Want the insurance company to pay for your log-term care down the road? Now is the time to price it out and consider a 20-year paid-up plan.

9.       Save more, spend less. The national savings rate is now less than 1%. Your goal should be to allocate 10%+ of each pay towards savings and RRSP’s. A take-home $1000 means $100 per pay period should be saved – allowing you to live on the other 90% guilt-free.

10.   Forget product, you need a strategy. If your finances are like most, your insurance, savings, RRSP and RESP investments have been spread over five to six policies/accounts in three to four different institutions over the years. A good advisor can help quarterback and pull the whole strategy together to make sure everything is working in your best interests.

Make this the year that you get a good handle on where you stand today. Take this financial snapshot now. Then, if you need a hand from there, give me a call. I can help.

Milton Optometry educates momstown Milton moms about Child Vision

How much do you know about your child's vision?
Parents, test your "Eye-Q"!

As many as 1 in 6 children has a vision problem serious enough to impact their learning and development. TRUE! Often parents are totally unaware.

My child will tell me if he or she has a vision problem. FALSE! Children under 9-10 years old do not know what normal vision is and assume they are seeing well.

A vision screening performed in a school is the same as an eye exam done at an Optometry office. FALSE! School vision screenings can help identify children with vision problems but are very basic and are NOT the same as a comprehensive eye health exam.

Conditions such as lazy eye (amblyopia) should be corrected by age 6 in order to have the best chance of correcting the problem. TRUE! If eye problems like lazy eye or turned eye (strabismus) are detected early, there is an excellent chance they can be fully corrected.

Rubbing eyes, squinting or tilting head to one side are all symptoms of a possible vision problem in your child. TRUE! These are noticeable problems. Other less obvious things such as avoiding close work, sitting close to the TV and hand-eye coordination problems are also signs.

Babies are not able to have a full eye examination. Only children who can read letters are able to have one. FALSE! Babies as young as 6 months of age should be examined by an Optometrist. Children do not have to be able to read to have an eye exam.

Children should have their eye examined only when they say they are not seeing well. FALSE! It is recommended that children have their eyes examined annually by an Optometrist.

After an eye examination, a parent should know if their child's eyes are coordinated, see colour and have good depth perception. TRUE! A comprehensive eye exam will tell you all of these things.

An optometrist, ophthalmologist and my family doctor all have different roles in helping my child's vision.
TRUE! Family doctors are often one of the first professionals to see a child and recommend an eye exam with an Optometrist. Optometrists are primary eye care providers that perform full eye health examinations and prescribe medications when necessary. Ophthalmologists are eye surgeons.

As much as 80% of learning in the early years is visual.
TRUE! Vision plays a HUGE role in the growth and development of a child's brain.

Bring your child into Milton Optometry today for a full comprehensive eye examination! It is full insured by OHIP for all children under 19 years.
