Easy Desert Themed Kids Craft - Coyote at Sunset

We had a howling good time at our Picasso's in the Park this month. To keep with our momstown theme (The Desert) we decided to introduce the kids to a common desert animal - the Coyote!  Kids of all ages could participate in this simple yet engaging craft. Warning - be prepared to get messy!

Materials Required:

Red and Yellow Paint
Paint Brushes
Construction Paper cut outs - Coyote and the moon
Glue

What to Do:

1. Put globs of red and yellow paint sparingly onto a "heavy" paper.

Learning Aspect - Talk to your child about mixing colours and what colour will appear when red and yellow paints are mixed together.

Green Tip - save cereal boxes - open and cut along the seam. Turn over for a great inexpensive paint canvas!

Sensory - let kids use their hands to mix the paint instead of a brush.

2. Let paint dry and then glue on coyote and moon cut outs.

Complete the lesson with this:

Cuff hands and howl

The coyote in the desert howls Awwww, Awww, Awww
The coyote in the desert howls Awww, all night long

momstown Milton's Art & Play Program - Balls of Fun

Our momstown Milton tots had Balls of Fun at our Art and Play Program. This month the theme of our educational curriculum was "At the Circus" so we decided to juggle, roll and bounce our balls through gobs of paint to see what would happen.

We started off with a variety of balls that were different in colour, size and texture - sensory overload! The kids were hesitant at first because they were unsure about getting the balls dirty. With a little bit of prompting, they soon began to get right into it and discovered the different types of prints that a golf ball made in contrast to a fuzzy tennis ball or a big smooth plastic ball.

Other learning concepts came into play such as sharing as the little ones rolled the ball back and forth across the table to each other.

When all was done, the mamas were very thankful to have the Huggies Simply Clean wipes in reach to clean up their little messy artists.

Join us next month when we make fishing rods and go put them to the test in the creek for our On the Pond theme.

Splattering Fun with the Red Cross Society

Our momstown Milton, Burlington and Oakville chapters had a splattering good time at our Picasso's program. This month we had a special visit from the Red Cross Society to talk about Water Safety so we decided to be on theme with our craft by creating paint puddles for the little ones to splash around in. Bright blue paint with sparkles to simulate  shimmering water was mixed with water and then poured in to containers.

The little ones could chose to dip their feet into trays and pitter patter their way across the rows of craft paper that was laid out or sit at the tables lined with paint in cookie sheets to smack at and smear for tactile stimulation. They especially enjoyed reaching into the puddles trying to catch & gather the gold glitter that was floating around.

The moms were very thankful to have the Huggies Simply Clean Wipes on hand to scrub off the paint and sparkles. They were very impressed with the thickness and durability and how few they had to use to get the job done.

While the kids settled down for snack time, the moms listened to a brief info session about water safety. It covered topics such being alert and aware of the dangers present, how to minimize backyard drownings and addressed the effectiveness of various floatation devices.

After the discussion, we pulled out the parachute and had circle time. Its always fun to see the expressions on the kids faces especially when they are running under it.

Overall it was a fantastic event! I look forward to our next Picasso's in the Park where we will be doing "paint ball" and marble drawings. If you would like to join in on the fun at our next Art & Play program please register for your 6 week FREE trial membership on our momstown Milton website.

momstown summer standard!

Our little ones gathered at Lowville Park yesterday for our first of many Picasso's in the Park programs. Our momstown Milton members met up with momstown Burlington to create some wonderful, vibrant works of art and enjoy a day out in the sun.

Our theme this month is Construction so we used different mediums such as cars, trucks, loaders etc to wheel thru the globs of paint that was scattered all over the tables.

At one point, one of our tots discovered that the car he was playing with could be wound up and released to spin it's wheels. The paint splattered everywhere! What a mess, but that's what it is all about! Letting loose, letting go of your inhibitions and just allowing yourself and your child to explore and enjoy without worrying about the clean up afterwards!

Once our budding artists were done, we pulled out the giant parachute to sing some songs and play some games. I think the moms liked "sleeping bunnies" the best because it seemed to settle down the kids if only for a few moments!

Park play and a picnic in the park was a great way to wrap up the event. I can't wait until next month when we do it all again with different sensory equipment. You'll have to sign up to attend in order to find out what we will be using next!

Art in the Park!!!

Paint, paint and more paint!

Our momstown seasonal favourite "Picasso's in the Park" opened today and on such a beautifully sunny day!!

Both momstown Milton and momstown Burlington gathered at Lowville park to explore the sensory elements of paint. I think the mamas explored too (I know I came home covered in paint also!).

The weather was so great for a picnic and play in the playground too.

Join us next month for our June Picasso's event (and the creek will be warm enough then to wash the paint right off us!).
